Many questions from the story, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” are answered in Wicked. Why is the Cowardly Lion such a wimp?
Who really is the Tin Man? What did the first robot look like? When did monkeys learn to fly? Where exactly did those
ruby-red slippers come from? How could a simple bucket of water possibly destroy the Wicked Witch anyway?
In Wicked, the early, pre-Dorthy, lives of Elphaba, who is the daughter of the Governor of Munchkinland, and also the
eventual Wicked Witch of the West, and Galinda, who eventually becomes Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, are explored.
They attend Shiz University together, but don't have much in common besides being attracted to the same man, after all,
growing up with green skin gives Elphaba quite a chip on her shoulder. Their relationship is put to the test as their very
different personalities and feelings have them clashing over various situations, everything from petty jealousy to the
Wizard and his authoritarian government of the Land of Oz. Eventually, Elphaba is revealed to have a "dark and evil" soul
and is publicly shamed, resulting in her becoming the misunderstood character Dorthy dueled with and eventually melted in
the "Wizard of Oz."
